Hair Transplant FAQs & Facts Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS) On Hair Transplantation

During hair transplant procedure, hairs are first extracted from the regions of the head that show resistance to baldness. After that, these resistant strands are implanted on the bald patches seen on the scalp. The process works because hair taken from the areas with resistance to baldness will remain resistant to baldness wherever they are placed. Hair transplant gives natural and permanent results.

Follicular unit or graft refers to a bunch of hair that grows in a group naturally on the scalp. A follicular unit can have 1 to 4 hairs in it. On an average, each follicular unit consists of 2.4 hairs.

When you are suffering from a high rate of hair loss and your scalp has become visible, you can go for hair transplantation after consulting your hair transplant surgeon.

We use the most technically advanced method of hair transplant. Instead of using the old punch graft or slit method technique, we perform hair transplant with the help of no touch and root by root techniques

Some scabs are formed on the scalp after the hair transplant. There will be redness visible on the scalp too. However, scabs and redness will wither away on their own within 7 to 10 days, and after that your hair will look as natural as they could.

You need to keep your scalp clean and shampoo your hair after the hair transplant. No special care is required.

No, we don’t use laser.

In laser hair transplantation, laser is used to transplant hair. The procedure generates heat and destroys body tissues. Insertion of follicles becomes tough in it because they are not of the same size. Further, heat produced during the creation of the site decreases the blood supply in follicles, and therefore, the results are often poor.

It can be done provided you have enough good donor hair at back of your head. Our technique will give you natural and permanent hair with the kind of density and hairline you desire.

Hair transplant doesn’t require any overnight stay as it involves day care procedure only. You are free to return to your native place the same day after the procedure is over. We will instruct you how to take care of hair post surgery. No matter where you are, if you have any other query, contact us whenever you want and we will be more than pleased to address it.

The process of implanting 2000 to 2,500 follicles in a day is called a mega session.

Androgenetic Alopecia, commonly referred to as male pattern baldness (MPB), accounts for 95% of hair loss. There is hair loss among females too. Some of the most common factors contributing to hair loss are listed below:

• Smoking
• Alcohol intake
• Stress
• Genetic : Hereditary occurring in the family
• Mechanical damage: Traction alopecia owing to regular use of wigs, hair weaving, hair bonding, etc.
• Systematic Medical Problems: Hypothyroidism, high fever and pregnancy
• Medications : Anti cancer drugs and radiotherapy medication
• Alopecia Areta: Disorder in immunity causing patchy hair loss
• Telogen Efflueum: Diffuse loss of long hairs with roots
• Dermatological: Skin disease affecting scalp
• Diet: Deficiency of vitamin A, E, and B or iron deficiency
• Chemical damage: Use of bleaches, dyes, hard water and low quality cosmetic applications can result in hair loss too.
• Idiopathic : No definite cause

Two most common drugs that doctors prescribed for androgenetic pattern hair loss across the world are – Minoxidil, a topical medication for both men and women that is applied twice a day, and Finasteride (Propecia), a pill intended for men only and taken once a day. These medicines may prove helpful in the initial stage of hair loss. They may slow down the hair loss and in some individuals, may even stop the progression of hair loss. You would need to take them for a long time and their effect will be visible only after 6 - 9 months of continuous use. FUE hair transplant, on the other hand, will solve the problem of hair loss for good.

With the progression of baldness, hairs become thinner whereas the sebaceous gland becomes larger with more secretion. These enlarged glands come to the fore owing to baldness. It is not a cause.

Depending on the number of grafts you require, a hair transplant takes anywhere between 4 to 10 hours. It will start in the morning and will be over by evening .You can go back to your home the same day and don’t need overnight stay.

In the first session, the maximum possible bald area will be covered. We will try to implant the maximum number of grafts in that session. Generally, it’s a onetime process. However, in some cases of advance baldness, more number of grafts are required to cover a large area of baldness, and therefore, 2 or 3 sessions may be required.

A majority of patients, who have gone through this procedure, say they felt no discomfort or pain after the procedure. Local anesthesia is used in both donor and recipient sites so that a patient feels no pain during the procedure too.

An outline of a hair transplant schedule is listed below:

Patient Evaluation

You can either send us pictures of your scalp or visit our clinic for initial assessment. Our Doctor will examine you to assess the current status of your hair loss, the extent of baldness and the condition of donor hair. A general medical checkup will be done too. After that, he will let you know if you are a good candidate for hair transplant. If a patient fits the bill, he will be evaluated further to find out what kind of treatment suits him the best, how many grafts he will require, and how many sessions he may need.

Patient Preparation

The patient needs to be in good physical condition before going through a hair transplant. Even when the patient suffers from any medical illness, hair transplant can be performed with careful evaluation and review of medications. Hemogram, BT, CT PT, HIV HBSAG are some of the tests that a patient has to go through before hair transplant surgery is carried out. You can book your hair transplant by paying deposit in advance.

Procedure day

Hair Transplantation is a relatively safe procedure as it deals with the skin. Local anesthesia is administered in the scalp, ensuring the patient feels no pain during the procedure. The patient can take breaks during the procedure and walk, stretch, and even eat. The duration of surgery varies from 5 to 10 hours, depending upon the number of grafts needed. After the procedure is over, the patient can go home.

Post Op Shampoo

The patient is asked to visit the clinic the following day for his first post op shampoo. In this, he will be instructed as to how he can shampoo himself properly everyday at home. The grafts and donor area are also examined during this visit to make sure everything is fine. The patient can go back home after this and resume his work. The patient will be provided with a care instruction list and prescription of medications too. For follow-up, you can visit the clinic again after two weeks or contact us via email/skype/whatsapp, etc.

Transplanted hair is for good and will last a lifetime provided that the grafts taken were from a safe donor site. The existing hair, which was getting thinned, may be lost with time. Hair transplantation is effective in restoring the lost hair.

You need to shampoo it gently post the hair transplant. Don’t shower it directly. Use your hands instead to rinse it softly. You can sport a cap to protect your new hair from a direct exposure to the sunlight.

Hair transplant is known to have no side effects or complications. It is considered quite safe.

No scar is formed anywhere on the scalp in FUE technique. It is a painless technique too. We use planters, which are designed specifically for hair transplantation. They leave no scars on the area where new hairs are planted.

The number of grafts required depends on:
• The extent of hair loss
• Hairline desire
• Density of hair in donor area,
• Density desired
• Future hair loss

The density of hair is very high on the back of the scalp from where the grafts are extracted. The grafts are taken out in a random way so that the donor area continues to have a natural look.

The hair transplant gives a permanent solution to baldness. The transplanted hair will grow like your natural hair without requiring any maintenance. You can comb it, wash it, oil it and cut/trim/shave it like natural hair.

For those patients, who do not have enough donor hair, grafts can be extracted from beard, chest and legs for the transplant.

The transplanted hairs will begin to grow right after the procedure, but it will take around 6 to 9 months for the fully grown hair to appear on the scalp.

Hair transplant is carried out in these two ways:

• Strip technique or FUT: In this, harvesting is done by taking out a strip of skin from your backside of head. The hairs are then separated before being implanted on the bald area. Scalp skin is cut stitched. FUT technique thus involves a lot of pain and causes a long linear scar too.

• Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique: In FUE technique, one follicular unit is removed by one unit without cutting the skin.

We perform hair transplant using Max FUE Technique- the most advanced version of FUE technique.

It is the most advanced version of FUE technique. Our Doctor has himself designed and refined it. An entirely non-surgical method, it causes no cuts, scars and blood. It is painless, has no side-effects, besides using minimal number of stitches.

1st Growth Phase: Right after the plantation of the grafts, hair will start growing. It will grow up to 1-2 cm in the first 4-6 weeks.

2nd Temporary Shedding Phase: The transplanted hair will start falling, but roots will stay intact beneath the skin. This phase lasts for about 3 months. You need not to worry during this phase. Your transplanted hair will grow back soon and continue to grow throughout your life.

3rd Permanent Growth Phase: In this phase, all the fallen hair will grow back. The transplanted hair will have the same appearance as the natural hair and will keep growing for the rest of your life. You will able to see fully grown hair on your scalp in 6 to 9 months’ time.

The entire head will be trimmed to zero level on the day of the procedure.

After hair transplant, some small crusts (scabs) are formed on the head. They will wither away, though, in 10 to 14 days’ time. The scalp will look natural.

You can go back after the procedure is over and resume your work from the next day. You can wear a cap, hat or bandana to hide the recipient site if it makes you conscious.

The cost of hair transplantation depends on the number of grafts needed to cover baldness. One graft generally costs Rs 40. Add to it service tax, which includes surgeon’s charge, operation theatre charges, medical disposables and administrative charges.

Your existing hairs will remain intact. The new grafts are implanted with care in the empty spaces between the existing hairs with a magnified vision. We will prescribe you medications to stop hair loss.

Following blood tests are conducted before hair transplant:
• Hemogram
• BT, CT PT
• HIV, HBSAG
• Blood sugar (random)

Hair transplant is performed inside a fully equipped and sterile operation theatre. We follow international guidelines laid for the procedure and have the highest standard surgical disposable items to ensure zero level infection.

1) Arrival- You should reach our clinic by 8 am. You will have to first fill a consent form and then pictures will be taken for documentation and to assess results.

2) Hairline marking- After consulting with you, a natural and unnoticeable hairline is designed. The whole head is trimmed then before being washed and cleaned with antiseptic solution.

3) Extraction of grafts- You will be made to lie down in a special imported hair transplant chair inside the operation theatre, and your scalp will be cleaned again. After that, local anesthesia will be given using a short needle. Once the scalp gets numbed, grafts are taken out using automated FUE machine with specialized blunt punches. Each graft is pulled out using magnifying glass with a special emphasis given on the angle and direction of the hair .The grafts are kept in a special solution at low temperature for their survival. Grafts are counted 3 times- using both hands a graft counter machine. A patient can check it at any time.

4) Implantation of grafts- The hairline is marked again following your consent. After numbing the head, implantation is done using specialized planters. It’s carried out under magnified vision (surgical Loupe), ensuring the natural angle, depth and direction of the hairs.

5) Cleaning & dressing- After the procedure is over, the whole head is washed with antiseptic solution. Dressing is done after that. It is removed the next day.
